music to my ears — ipods allowed at marathons

Monica on her last mile of the National Marathon Wash DC

I just recently registered for the Chicago Marathon and noticed this question on the website.

Can I run with an iPod/headphones?
Yes.
USATF, the governing body of the sport, recently amended the ban on headphones, ipods, etc. Only athletes competing in Championship races for awards, medals or prize money may not use electronic devices such as headphones.

I have seen many runners clearly ignore the previous ban posted on marathon websites.   I used to be opposed to running with them myself until I ran with an ipod at the National Marathon in DC last March (Photo: I still had them on here on the home stretch).  I put my head phones on at mile 20 as my “treat” for the last 6.2, a replacement for yet another “goo”.  I was actually worried that they might say something and even meant to take them off before the finish but I was too lost in “Hanging On ” to give them up.  I think of it as pain management by distraction or inspiring my finish with my own soundtrack of the experience.  I am just happy to hear they are embracing how much sound effects can help a person make it to the finish line.  **Update** I have learned even more about how music can help w/ racing and training, see “Best Running Music Ever — Marathon mixes for a 7 – 10.5 min pace (140 – 190 bpm)”
