This year I finally signed up to run the Boston Marathon. Woo hoo! I have qualified three times and decided I was ready to make the commitment to train through the winter months (you know what I am talking about). I really enjoy training but it is h-a-r-d and can be very challenging in the cold weather before dawn.
It is now March and my brother calls and mentions mom’s 87th birthday in April (you guessed it) the same weekend as the Boston Marathon! I ask myself…do I really run to race or do I race to run?
I need goals to keep me going. My goals define my training. I love the satisfaction I receive from running a great race due to my well tuned body and I HATE the feeling of defeat due to lack of adequate training. Boston is the victory lap for a fast and well trained marathon.
I WILL run it next year. This is just another one of those twists and turns that life throws at you unexpectedly…so I will… just keep on running!
My long distance friends, do you run to race or race to run?
